Guidelines for Duties and Responsibilities of Bulk Waste Generators Approved

The government has approved guidelines and issued an order outlining the duties and responsibilities of large-scale waste generators. Kerala produces approximately 25 lakh tones of waste annually, with 69% organic and 31% inorganic waste. According to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, entities generating 100 kg of garbage daily are considered bulk waste generators. These guidelines apply to buildings housing offices of local and public sector organizations, private companies, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, colleges, universities, stadiums, resident welfare associations, colonies, hotels, and similar establishments. Bulk waste generators are required to hand over inorganic waste to designated local self-governing bodies and manage organic waste at the source. In 2024, the Kerala Municipal Act and the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act were amended to enforce compliance with these guidelines, incorporating penalties such as fines and imprisonment for violators.https://document.kerala.gov.in/documents/governmentorders//govtorder1703202415:12:20.pdf
