Landslide Disaster – Temporary rehabilitation policy

The government has initiated procedures for the temporary rehabilitation of victims from the Wayanad Mundakai-Churalmala landslide disaster. As part of this effort, an order has been issued to provide rent allowances for disaster-affected families to relocate from various camps and other places to rented houses in the first phase. A sum of ₹6,000 per month will be provided for shifting to rented houses or relatives' houses. However, this monthly rent allowance will not be available for those moving into government-owned or other publicly owned premises provided free of cost by private individuals or for buildings offering accommodation through sponsorship. In cases of partial sponsorship, the remaining amount may be granted as a monthly rent allowance, up to a maximum of ₹6,000. The rent allowance will be funded by the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund.

So far, the government has identified more than 250 rented houses for temporary rehabilitation. Eighteen groups are conducting a detailed survey to gather the opinions of disaster victims regarding rehabilitation. Initially, rental houses are being provided in the Meppadi, Muppainad, Vythiri, Kalpetta, Muttil, and Ambalavayal panchayats. Efforts are underway to implement these scientific temporary rehabilitation systems as quickly as possible. In this context, the government's decision to allocate rent from the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund will facilitate speedy rehabilitation.
