*Government to Implement 'Snehalayam' Name for Old Age Homes*

The State Government's order to rename all elderly care centres and old age homes as 'Snehalayam' will be implemented across the state. As part of the decision, the term 'old age home' will be removed from official documents and public use.

State Human Rights Commission Judicial Member K. Baijunath has directed the Director of the Social Justice Department to complete all administrative procedures without delay. The new name 'Snehalayam' should be updated on name boards, official websites, government publications, public documents and all communication materials.

The Commission issued the directive while considering a complaint filed by Prof. Varghese Mathew, who pointed out that the term 'old age home' creates a feeling of inferiority among senior citizens. Although the government order renaming these institutions came into effect in December 2024, the Commission observed that the old name is still being used in many places. It therefore called for immediate implementation of the order and greater public awareness to ensure the new name is widely adopted.

The name 'Snehalayam', meaning Home of Love, reflects a more caring and respectful approach towards senior citizens. It promotes dignity, self-respect and a sense of belonging, instead of making residents feel isolated or labelled because of their age.

The new name also conveys the message that senior citizens should be treated with care, respect and compassion, and remain an integral part of society. It is expected to encourage families, visitors and the public to look at these institutions with greater warmth and understanding, helping create a more inclusive and elderly-friendly society.
