Order Granting Menstrual Leave to ITI Students

The government has introduced menstrual leave for female trainees in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). Under the new order, female trainees will be entitled to two days of menstrual leave per month. This decision follows a request from the Kerala Industrial Trainees Council 2022, which sought menstrual leave provisions similar to those granted to female university students in the state.

The decision acknowledges the health challenges and mental stress women face during menstruation, particularly in the context of rigorous skill training programs. Female trainees in ITIs will be allowed to compensate for any shortfall in the 80% attendance requirement through shop floor training. This policy will benefit over 100 female ITI students across Kerala.

To accommodate this leave without compromising training schedules, ITI shifts will be adjusted. The first shift will run from 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM, and the second shift from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Additionally, Saturdays, typically holidays, may be utilised for shop floor training and extracurricular activities.

This initiative is in line with the Kerala Higher Education Department's 2023 decision to grant menstrual leave to female students in all state universities.
