Model Township Approved for Wayanad Disaster Victims; Rehabilitation

The government has issued an order to construct a model township for the rehabilitation of disaster-affected victims in the Wayanad district. The township will be built in the Meppadi gram panchayat at Vellarmala village, located in Vythiri taluk. The project has been approved for two sites: Nedumpala Estate in Meppadi Panchayat and Elstone Estate in Kalpatta Municipality. A total of 144.14 hectares of land has been sanctioned for acquisition under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, with 65.41 hectares in Nedumpala Estate and 78.73 hectares in Elstone Estate.

The land is being acquired while excluding existing residential areas. In the first phase, around 700 families who lost their homes and land during the disaster will be rehabilitated. In the second phase, families from uninhabitable areas will be resettled. The collector will prepare and publish a draft list of beneficiaries, and rehabilitation will proceed based on the final list.

Disaster victims will have the option to choose which township they wish to relocate to. Families who previously expressed a preference for Meppadi will be resettled there, while others will be accommodated in Kalpatta. The new townships will be equipped with essential public infrastructure such as playgrounds, anganwadis, schools, and hospitals, and will be situated in areas with access to roads, drinking water, and other basic facilities.
