Ente Koodu Project: Government Order on Regulation of Extended Stay

The government has issued new guidelines to ensure the smooth functioning of the Ente Koodu scheme of the Women and Child Development Department, which provides safe night shelter for women and children arriving in cities. As per the order, a charge of ₹150 per day will be levied from the fourth day onwards for those who need to stay at these centres for more than three days.

The order specifies that the additional amount collected at Ente Koodu institutions, including those currently operating in Ernakulam district, must be remitted directly to the government treasury through the e-treasury website. To ensure transparency, the amount is to be collected only through the treasury system, and not through bank accounts.

A key advantage of the Ente Koodu scheme is that women who unexpectedly need to remain in cities for more than a few days can stay safely under government protection at a nominal rate of ₹150 per day, without having to depend on private lodges. Proper regulation of accommodation will also enable more eligible travellers to benefit from the service.

The significantly lower charges compared to private hotels provide much-needed relief to ordinary women and children. Moreover, direct remittance of payments to the government through the e-treasury system ensures greater accuracy and transparency in the implementation of the project.
