Public visits to the Idukki and Cheruthoni dams are now permitted

The public is now allowed to visit the Idukki and Cheruthoni Dams, with permits valid for three months starting from September 1. Access is limited to a maximum of 20 people at a time, and all safety protocols must be followed. Visits will be restricted on days with Orange and Red alerts or when the District Disaster Management Authority imposes tourism restrictions. Additionally, the dams will be closed to visitors on Wednesdays and on days when water release is scheduled.

The Kerala Hydel Tourism Center and the Police will oversee public safety and the security of the dams and surrounding areas. The green protocol will be enforced, prohibiting plastic disposal in the vicinity. Adequate waste management and temporary toilet facilities will be available at the site.

The Idukki Dam, Asia’s first arch dam, is the largest water reservoir in Kerala, covering 60 square kilometres. Access is generally restricted due to its size. The Cheruthoni Dam, located adjacent to Idukki, offers a boating facility connecting it to the Kulamavu Dam as part of its tourism services.
